For our first installment in a two-part series, today we are looking back at some spectacular set designs from past seasons with one consistent element: using light as staging. In the examples below the lighting schemes are more graphic/ structural in their design. Using light for a fashion show is necessary to highlight the clothing as well as to set a certain mood but it has also become an important element when creating the backdrop for the show that will compliment the collection.

backstage look, Flashback, H/MU

Not long ago in 2010, Proenza Schouler started their hair and make-up signature look for the surf/skate SS10 collection. This specific summer collection was the inspiration for their recent collaboration with MAC cosmetics  (see our previous blog post about this collaboration). To date, the hair and makeup is similar to their earlier looks. Note the minimalist themes: natural skin tones, light colored lips, with darker hues around the eyes. Below we present the Proenza Schouler Girl in a timeline beginning with their most recent show going all the way back to that SS10 collection. “Natural beauty” at it’s finest!

JS6

This week, we are looking back at the H/MU of one of our 2009 productions; the Jonathan Saunders Spring 2009 show. Backstage, Saunders talked about ‘color’ being his main focus (see style.com). The result was a bright, electric and graphic collection, which came to life as well on the model’s faces. World-renowned make-up artist Pat McGrath created a very colorful make-up look to complement the collection, focusing on the eyes.

BALENCIAGA

Nicholas Ghesquière may be leading the house of Louis Vuitton into the future, but we are thinking back to a time when he took The House of Balenciaga out of Paris to our very own city, still in recovery post 9/11. For fall 2002  and Fall 2003 collections Nicholas Ghesquière (vogue.com) called on Dizon Inc to produce 2 very exclusive shows, 1 in Gagosian for Fall 2002 and 1 at The Dia for Fall 2003.

This very dated video clip features the show from Gagosian and is worth watching for the fashion as well as the baby faced cameos from familiar fashion faces. Front row guests included Sarah Jessica Parker, Tim Blanks and Anna Wintour (note: w/o her signature black shades). Look for Liya Kebede, Karolina Kurkova and Natalia Vodianova (Style.com) and even Erin Wasson, Danielle Z. and Trish Goff at the Dia Show (style.com).

backstage look, Fashion Designer, Fashion History

Last week some of New York’s most iconic fashion names were heading south to support the 2014 graduation show (have a look at Refinery 29 for a full report) at Savannah College of Art and Design. This season they took the show to the next level by presenting the collections in the SCAD Museum of Art. A beautifully restored building designed by (Christian Sottile). Among the guests were Pat Cleveland and Andre Leon Talley, a long time SCAD supporter, who presented his Lifetime Achievement Award to the acclaimed fashion designer Stephen Burrows, who is the subject of a special exhibition at SCAD through September 15 titled ‘An American Master of Inventive Design.

Guests included J. Alexander, who coached the models on their walks and especially their attitude, Natalie Joos from the vintage fashion blog: Tales of Endearment, among other editors and insiders coming to see what the next generation is up to. The Dizon team was brought in to bring a touch of NY fashion week to the Savannah school.

In honor of J. Alexander, the models created a tribute video of his signature pose.

In case you missed the livestream of the SCAD fashion show, you can re-watch it on their website.
